Man of Steel

I made it to see Man of Steel today.  I must say that for everything that was wrong about Superman Returns, Man of Steel has right.  I want to do a more in depth and Spoiler laced look at the film tomorrow, but right now I just want to praise the movie.

It really is a great version of a classic icon of American culture.  I remember the tag from the Christopher Reeve era, "You will believe a man can fly" and will tell you that it happened again for me.  The casting was spot on.  Henry Cavill just looked, moved and sounded like Clark Kent/Kal-El.  I felt like I was seeing the person I have read so many things where the character lives.

If you have not seen this movie, then run to the theater this weekend and watch it.  It is worth the money.

Flashback Friday: Heroes Convention 2013 "The Art Edition"

Yes I am just going to go back a week and savor the vacation this year.  I promise to have pretty artwork as I do.  This year the room was spacious and made the navigating much better.  I really did hate the end of the Convention.  I was at peace and really enjoying the art and people.  I was very good about money this year.  I did get some commissions done.  One was by Mike Maihack from Google + and my following.  He did the awesome comic strip prints of Batgirl and Supergirl.  I love his art and asked him to do a commission in my sketchbook of Huntress.  It was a great addition to my ever growing book of sketches.  I bought his sketchbook and some other prints as well.  He probably thought I was crazy.  I get excited sometimes.

I bought two sketch cover comics.  A Green Lantern and an Aquaman version.  I really went silly with the GL book.  It does not represent continuity at all.  I asked a young lady to have Mogo and the Tardis on the cover.  It was a Mash Up that I figure will be unique in the coming years.  She did a great job and I regret I did not get her picture with the cover like I did the other one.  That one has a headshot of Mera on it the artist is in a pic with the cover.  I picked her because I was watching her do a commission and her displayed work showed a great beauty and a great realism in the way she portrayed her work.  So I have a Throne of Atlantis issue with the gorgeous Mera on the cover.  I just wish I had been able to track down the cosplay Mera and had her pose with it.

I am adding some other prints I picked up.  I love just finding cool prints as I scour the aisles.  Sometimes you get really cool art from people that are just trying to make a living as an artist at Conventions and maybe be discovered.  They are not in the comicbooks, but should be.  Others work for independents or card companies.  There are rare gems out there in the fringes and I love when I find a piece of art that is shining bright.  One day I will be able to display all I have collected.  I have a plan that I want to work on, but that is a future blog post.

I have neglected to report on my goal concerning my T-Shirt on Friday.  I was disappointed with not having a unique shirt last year and was determined to be seen this year.  I accomplished it with my shirt that displays the Internet mash up called by two names, "The Time Job" or "The Tardis Job," based on Firefly and Dr.Who.  I received many compliments and many double takes as I walked around on opening day.  It was cool knowing I had the only version there at HeroesCon.

HeroesCon 2013 Recollections

Leading up to my vacation at HeroesCon this year I was emotionally drained.  I had been having a terrible time with emotional triggers for my depression and the struggle with diabetes was not going well.  These two health issues were dragging me down.  I had been missing mama more this year and the anniversaries that accompany my wishing she were still alive were very hard.  I was struggling at work, dealing not only with drama in my Youth Group but having to deal with change at a church we were working with that was experiencing change that reminded me of the turmoil I left behind in my last ministry setting.  It was no wonder I had no desire to leave when the time came Sunday.

This year I had a more relaxed attitude about the days.  I didn't feel the need to be down there standing in line for an hour waiting for the Con to begin.  We left later and when we got there we signed in and went on down.  I was the same way Saturday.  I wonder if Richard noticed this about me?  It seems the new layout with more square footage worked well for my mindset this year.  Friday was nice with the big open space once I adjusted to the new setup.  I think the floor was easier to navigate as well.  The three areas were one long row of sections.  This made things great on the more crowded Saturday.

I was not happy with the effort of my Phantom Stranger Costume, so no CosPlay for me this year.  It was probably better.  I missed it though.  There were some great costumes.  I have my "crush" for this year picked out.  Sunday there was a Mera that was just beautiful.  Friday had a close runner up with Lee Loo from the Fifth Element.  It would be nice to find a gal that would be willing to go and dress up at the Convention with and just share life with too.  It would be cool I think.

One of the coolest moments came from the street festival that was blocking streets all weekend.  I had left Richard after Supper Saturday to go see the Art for the Charity Auction at the Westin.  On my way back as I neared our hotel I hear great jazz music.  Right at our hotel intersection a group of about twenty were free styling and it was just awesome.  I stood in the crowd just moving to the music and feeling wonderful.  It was a neat experience.

Heroes Convention 2013 Day 3

These are pictures from the last day of the Convention.  I really did not want it to end this year.

So the above pic is of me watching Billy Tucci's table while he went up to use his credit card machine to make a sale.  I am either a very trustworthy looking person or he is way to trusting.  Or so I was thinking as a sat there.

Heroes Convention 2013 Day 2 Pics

Basically a photo dump.  There will be Convention Posts all week long.
