New Warriors #0 or The Mighty Thor #411 & 412

There came a day when the heroes of the Marvel Universe were older and had become so engrossed in fighting their personal bad guys that low level scum seemed to be free to prey on the weak and helpless. At least that is what some young super powered teens thought. What you are about to be party to is the first in an ongoing look back on the comicbook that got me back into comics big time. The New Warriors were first seen here in the following issues of Thor, #411 & 412. It was during the Acts of Vengeance that we first got to see; (Kid) Nova, Namorita, Firestar, Justice, Speedball, and The Night Thrasher. They take on The Juggernaut when Thor is felled by a combination of his own health problems and the impact of his Hammer with Juggernaut trailing behind.

Yes, Thor lay defenseless. Juggernaut had a boxcar raised over his head prepared to crush the hero dead. That is when Firestar melted the boxcar to slag in Juggernaut's hands. A great fight ensues as Thor is helped to safety and recovery. The greatest scene is Night Thrasher going berserk and attacking Juggernaut on a skateboard. Then we did not know the way Thrasher's parents died nor how he felt toward evil doers. We just saw a silly non-powered guy in a special suit on a skateboard attacking the toughest foe of the X-Men.

Thor eventually joins the fight and still is unable to stop the Juggernaut. It is the teamwork of the Warriors that helps Thor dispatch Juggernaut to another dimension. It is the following panels that ends issue #412.

Thor bestows his thanks to the new kids on the block. The New Warriors are a team that was here to stay. They were given approval by Thor.  An endorsement like that is pretty important in the old school Marvel Universe.  These were a group of teens that had been coerced together, which we will learn next time, and end up becoming a favorite team to so many of us fans.  The grouping is a favorite of mine.  Not all mutants and not all Altered Humans.  It is the variety of heroes that will call themselves New Warriors which captures the imagination over the years.

Interesting take on justice.  A hero is merciful.  The New Warriors were born here and would soon be the stars of their own title from Marvel Comics.  Find out about the real New Warriors. Why No Marvel?

You stumble across this Blog and see about 90% DC Comics reviewed.  You are a follower and wonder why I never really talk about current Marvel comicbooks?  Well, I do not buy any Marvel books currently.  The last series I was reading involved Nova.  When the constant crossovers kept intruding I just gave it up.  Sadly I left a company I at one time was supporting fully.  I recently reread my Nova series until I stopped buying.  I still love the character and love Marvel.  I was reminded how perverse the Marvel Universe had become to me.  Heroes becoming fascists and Spider-man making deals with the devil so writers could have him with multiple sexual possibilities.  I could go on and on about the way these characters just did not feel right.  The strange relationship fans and corporate leaders have was broken for me.  I took to heart the  idea Quesada snidely gave of reading the back stock of Marvel Comics if I (fans) did not like the direction the company was going creatively.  I have.  I read the glorious old comics where integrity and responsibility mean something.  I read about heroes that sacrifice real and substantial things for the greater good.  Marvel currently is for a type of reader I am not.  I suppose they are selling books, and a friend of mine would say they do not care if they lost my business.  Still, are there more "mes" out there?  I am not alone right?  Others became feed up and broke the mentality of just overlooking and buying anyway, right?  Truthfully, this came at a good time.  $3.99 is too much for a 22-page story, especially if you dislike the way things are.  I have decisions to make as DC will one day have to decide a new price rate.  So far their tiered pricing has kept most of my reads at $2.99  So I hope you realize why things are so unbalanced.

Secret Avengers #1

                As most of you know I gave up Marvel at the beginning of Brand new Day.  Well close, I was reading Nova until I could not stand buying Marvel anymore.  The crossovers and the lack of respect for the characters I loved just pushed me away.  I also was tired of the smug and arrogant remarks from the leadership.  I took their advice about reading the back issues if I did not like what they were producing.  So this is a rarity for me now.  I guess I should tell you why I picked the book up.

                I was buying my stack of books at the shop and was well over the every purchase over ten bucks gets a free book from this stack.  Yes, I just picked this up because it cost me nothing.  I can tell you that the $3.99 price does nothing to make me want to purchase the title.  Might get the Trade if it is ever in the used book store I frequent.  Still, it is a far book, if overpriced.

Ed Brubaker is the writer and that was a reason that I picked secret Avengers from the stack of Marvel books.  I wonder if there is a tricky buying incentive right now?  I knew if I was going to have a hope of enjoying this book Brubaker would help.  Mike Deodato is awesome on the artwork in the comic.  I like his War Machine.  See, Jim Rhodes is one of my favorite characters and to see him in this title is nice.  In fact the entire line up is interesting and full of characters I like.  Black Widow, Nova, Valkyrie, Moon Knight, Steve Rogers, the irritating Ant-Man, and Sharon Carter make up this is a nice contingent of heroes. 

So it is a nice story and a good start for a series.  The price and my aversion to the current climate of Marvel Corporate will not be seeing me buy this book though.  Was nice to visit, but I am still not moving back to my once home of comics.
